Wake Up Call! – Hard on Yourself?

HARD ON YOURSELF?

Letting go of being hard on yourself is one of the most important things you will ever do.

There was a time when I was particularly hard on myself. I needed to always do better and do more. Good enough seemed impossible. It was exhausting! So I went for help thinking that my self-esteem was the issue. I was surprised when my counselor assigned me the task of writing a compassion note to myself each day.

It seemed touchy-feely but I knew something had to change.

Reluctantly I began the assignment to remember my tone of voice and body language in a conversation I’d had with someone going through a difficult time and treat myself with the same empathy, kindness and compassion as I offered to another.

My resistance peeled away after the third day and I began to discover a more tender way to be with myself. This was not just about me! I noticed new patience and empathy with others. Self-compassion was also new compassion for others.  other side of a limitation.

Call-to-Action:

  • Write a compassion note to yourself each day for a least a week
  • Be attentive to the words you use to yourself

Notice how being hard on yourself gives way to compassion!
