Wake Up Call! – Unexamined Assumptions

uNEXAMINED ASSUMPTIONS

Unexamined assumptions keep you from surprising wonder!

A friend and I were spending a few days together and several people suggested we visit an exhibit of an artist whose work I was ambiguous about; feelings that bordered on disdain. Because our time together was more important to me than a particular exhibit I agreed we should go. As we walked into the first gallery my amazement at the art overwhelmed me!

In that moment would I allow my previous ambiguity to be heard or would I just be present to the unexpected?

With each turn into the next gallery my jaw kept dropping at the unexpected magnificence of the artist’s work. I was filled with awe and wonder at such beauty and playfulness. I’m not ambiguous about this artist anymore!

My unexamined assumptions might have kept me from being awake enough to be engaged and enthralled with what I was seeing. What unexamined assumptions will you and I test, challenge or set aside today?

PRACTICES:

  • Be aware of the unexamined assumptions you carry with you
  • Try setting one aside and be present to the moment

Notice how you then become awake to unexpected wonder.
